Thirty-five years ago...

My father proposed to my mother 35 years ago today. I was looking through some family photos a few months ago and found this gem from their engagement days. They've been through a lot together -- working, raising children, battling my father's cancer together -- and they did it all with a grace and determination I've always admired.
It's safe to say I've learned everything I know about love from them...what did your parents teach you about love, friends? xoxo

  1. this is lovely. my parents got divorced last year, after 25 yrs of marriage, they changed as people and grew apart. what i realised is the importance of marrying the right person. my mum has a boyfriend now who is more like her and she is much happier. love is about giving.. but you have to be right for each other.

  2. Thanks for sharing Melissa. I enjoyed seeing your family photos. Life lessons are a precious gift that your parents have given you. Especially those that are love lessons. They will live in your heart forever and can only multiply as you give it away to others. I remember your father from when I lived in DeKalb and was a U.U. member in the 80's through 1998. My grandparents were very influential in my life when it came to life lessons. I miss them dearly. I am also grateful for the many dear friends I have learned from along life's journey. What a blessing they have been.

  4. Happy engage-aversary to your folks! I think everything we learn about love and relationships we learn from our parents.

My parents have been married for 28 years and have been through a lot together. I think the most important thing they have taught me about love and marriage is that your special someone needs to be your best friend. They need to be the person you want to spend every day with. You need to not only love them, but like and respect who they are.

You also must never have one eye on the back door, looking for a way out.

    Thanks so much for sharing!
