Mystery Women: What's Their Story?

Have you ever looked at an old photograph and wondered, "Who is that? What's their story?"? That's exactly what happened to Richmond photographer Meagan Abell when she came across four sets of vintage photos while thrift shopping one day. As she wrote on her Facebook page...

They were sitting in a box of old vintage photographs in these plastic sleeves, and from what I could tell, they had been taken sometime in the 50’s. So obviously I brought them home, and today finally had them scanned in, and holy wow they are beautiful!!
Abell was so intrigued that she even enlisted the help of the Mighty Internet to help in her search to uncover the mystery behind the photos...

I would absolutely love to find the women in these photographs/the photographer who took them. The only info I have is that the negatives were found in a thrift store on Hull St in Richmond, VA. They are medium format, and judging by the style of dress, made in 1940-1950. The owner of the thrift store had no idea where they came from. I’m posting the best/clearest scans of the images, so if y’all could share this around, HOPEFULLY we can make it go viral and find the original photographer/subjects!!!!

And best of all? All the curiosity sparked the Twitter hashtag #FindTheGirlsOnTheNegatives! Although the women have yet to be identified, it's fun to read through the theories on who they are and why they were being photographed on the beach that day. It makes you wonder about their life: Are they still alive? Were they someone's mother? Friend? Wife? They have an entire life story, and yet, only a minuscule second of it is captured in these snap shots.

What do you think people would say about you if they found your photos years from now, friends? Do you think their assumptions would be accurate? And, what do you think is the story behind these beautiful photos? xoxo

  2. The saying that every picture tells a story couldn't be more true when it comes to these images. I hope she is able to unravel the mystery.
